It ends with cities of the future, which embody in some sense the music of civilization. Increasingly we are living on a city planet, and the possibilities for digital invention in that fabric are rich and varied. Computing and communications engineers used to think of "UI" as user interfaces with pretty modest scope. They now include "urban interfaces" and all the ways we can bring information technologies to life, designed to play out in a vastly larger theater. |

Kimberly Martin Group Head, Data Warehouse Solutions MasterCard Technologies Like most big companies, MasterCard’s business users have long been data rich but information poor. While as a global organization, MasterCard’s global data warehouse provided access to volumes of information business managers needed to make wise strategic investment decisions, but harvesting that information has historically been a difficult and expensive proposition for most business teams. In 2010, MasterCard launched a multi-year strategic investment around business intelligence to overhaul and simplify accessing data. The goal of this initiative was to put users of the data in the driver’s seat for harvesting just the information they need, whenever they need it. A big component of the success of this effort has been in choosing the right vendor partners along the way. WebFocus, by Information Builders, was selected as the enterprise business intelligence reporting engine for MasterCard. This session will explain why WebFocus was the right solution for MasterCard and how MasterCard came about learning of the capabilities of WebFocus from the 2010 Gateway to Innovation conference. Through hearing of a similar journey from World Wide Technology at the prior G2I event, MasterCard performed their own proof of concept with WebFocus and came to the conclusion that WebFocus would provide the right level of assisted query power to enable end users to function without needing the assistance of a programmer or becoming a programmer themselves. |

Producer, Director, Cinematographer, Author, Professional Speaker David Breashears' presentation is a spellbinding blend of first person story telling illustrated by breathtaking and rarely seen images from the Everest IMAX filming expedition. Breashears and his team found themselves engaged in what many considered an impossible endeavor: to film an ascent of Earth's highest peak, Mount Everest, in the world's largest film format, IMAX. During the seventy-two day expedition with a veteran team of high-altitude Himalayan mountaineers and filmmakers, a blizzard hit Mount Everest, killing eight climbers from another team that decided to continue their ascent despite unfavorable weather conditions. Breashears and his team, having made a decision to descend earlier, ceased all filming activities to climb back up and courageously assist the exhausted and wind-battered survivors of the storm, including selflessly volunteering their precious resources. In the aftermath of this tremendous setback, Breashears rallied his team and kept them focused on their grand objective, where they reached the summit of Mount Everest to become the first to film with an IMAX camera at the top of the world. The Everest IMAX film went on to become one of the highest grossing IMAX films in history. |

While many companies today are still duplicating logic in multiple languages to support the web, mobile and native applications, Express Scripts is taking full advantage of the latest in web technologies to not only save time and money, but also improve the user experience with a technology called SOFEA. SOFEA: Service Oriented Front-End Architecture leverages the well-known MVC pattern on the front-end decoupling the orthogonal presentation tier processes, allowing for better separation of responsibilities. The SOFEA approach allows for the same assets to be leverage on the browser, on a mobile device and by 3rd party partners, providing for better reuse and improved integration. In this session, the authors present original research on rural
outsourcing, the practice of outsourcing work to suppliers with
delivery centers located in low-cost, non-urban areas. The model
promises lower costs to clients than urban-based centers and a higher
quality of work, superior domain knowledge, a higher cultural
compatibility, closer proximity to the customer, and time zone
advantages over offshore suppliers. Based on interviews with US
rural outsourcing suppliers and customers, the session focuses on the
benefits, challenges, and emerging best practices of sourcing IT work
to rural suppliers. Interest in rural outsourcing in the US
continues to increase as federal and state governments seek ways to
create jobs and as government outsourcing contracts increasingly
require that work be done onshore. Outside the US, many countries,
including China, India, and Israel, are interested in rural
outsourcing as these countries struggle to compete in a tough global
economy.

By leveraging human skills and abilities in a novel way, Luis von Ahn wants to solve large-scale computational problems and collect training data to teach computers many of the basic human talents. To this end, Luis von Ahn treats human brains as processors in a distributed system, each performing a small part of a massive computation. Unlike computer processors, however, humans require an incentive in order to become part of a collective computation. Among other things, Luis von Ahn shows how to use online games as a means to encourage participation in the process. |
