| Lindell Ballroom B | ![]() Robert J. Osborn II Deputy Director U.S. Tranportation Command, Scott Air Force Base In this presentation, Robert J. Osborn II from US Transcom will describe efforts currently underway to use information technology to transform their supply chain systems to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of enterprise resources and functions. They will also discuss their implementation approach as it involves working with various partner organizations. The Joint Deployment and Distribution Enterprise (JDDE) requires a flexible IT framework that reduces the complexity and number of interfaces within the enterprise through the implementation of common prescribed interfaces with authoritative information sources (build once, use by all). The Distribution Process Owner (DPO) Enterprise consists of a resource-constrained environment where funding is diminishing over time, while the number of required capabilities is continuously increasing. The IT computing environment has hundreds of monolithic point-to-point systems with thousands of interfaces that are being maintained at very high cost to the government. To resolve this problem statement, the Distribution Portfolio Manager (DPfM) has established an improved IT portfolio investment decision process (Corporate Governance Process (CGP)). Governance is key in this DPO-wide Transformation, and DPfM is employing a rigorous portfolio management methodology and investment strategy to develop essential services and capabilities for the Warfighter. The DPO CSV is a transformational initiative that aids the DPO with identification, construction, and fielding of core capabilities (i.e. services). These new services are focused around DPO value chains and are used by warfighters and other customers to request, fulfill and track the distribution of people, equipment, and materiel in support of operations.

With today’s global IT software supply chain, project management and software/systems engineering processes must explicitly address security risks posed by exploitable software. Traditionally, these disciplines have not clearly and directly focused on software security risks that can be passed from projects to the organization. Software security assurance processes and practices span development and acquisition and can be used to enhance project management and quality assurance activities. Joe explains the critical need for adherence to the practices, guidelines, rules, and principles used to build security into every phase of software development. |

| 4:15 pm | Innovation in an Era of Accelerating Technologies | |||||||||||
| Khorassan Ballroom | ![]() Ray Kurzweil Inventor, Entrepreneur, Futurist, Author Kurzweil Technologies User innovation is a turbulent process. Rapid creation and violent destruction. Many winners and many losers, both big and small. Are there patterns of success in the chaos? Ray Kurzweil definitely thinks so. He has been on the bleeding edge of innovation for decades and his track record is something to admire. Ray was the principal developer of the first CCD flat-bed scanner, the first omni-font optical character recognition, the first print-to-speech reading machine for the blind, the first text-to-speech synthesizer, the first music synthesizer capable of recreating the grand piano and other orchestral instruments, and the first commercially marketed large-vocabulary speech recognition. Ray is an ardent student of technology trends and has developed mathematical models of how technology in different areas evolves. These models show that the pace of innovation itself is doubling every decade. As information technology achieves each new level of price-performance and capacity, new applications become feasible and existing business models lose their viability. The rate of change is now so rapid that even three to five year business plans need to consider that every level of an industry will undergo major changes during that period. Ray will talk about innovation in an era of accelerating technologies and how this will impact business, the economy, and society. |
